₹1 Lakh Crore for Bengal: Adani’s Investment Plan Puts Jobs, Healthcare and Industry in Focus

Kolkata, September 25: A proposed 2,000-bed hospital in New Town may be the first visible sign of a much larger ambition for West Bengal. As the foundation stone was laid on Thursday, Gautam Adani announced an investment roadmap of more than ₹1 lakh crore by 2035 across healthcare, ports, logistics, energy, roads, bridges, green cement and data centres. The hospital, Adani Arogya Mandir, is planned on a 51.75-acre site at Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub. With an investment of more than ₹4,000 crore, the campus is designed to bring together treatment, medical education and research. It is projected to serve more than two lakh inpatients and 20 lakh outpatients a year and generate about 10,000 jobs across the healthcare ecosystem. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari laid the foundation stone alongside Adani. The plan sets aside 1,000 beds for eligible patients from economically weaker sections under government health insurance schemes. Its first phase will focus on cancer care, while the wider campus is expected to include a medical college, nursing education and training for allied health professionals. The employment story could extend beyond the hospital if the broader investment plan moves into construction. Infrastructure projects can bring orders for contractors and local suppliers; operating them can create demand for technical, logistics and support staff. Better transport and power links could also make it easier for other businesses to invest in the state. Those wider effects remain prospects, not announced job totals: the group has not given an overall hiring figure or a timetable for every project. Adani also announced support for restoring Writers’ Building, revitalising Kumartuli Ghat and promoting Kolkata’s Durga Puja. For Bengal, the larger test now begins: turning a headline investment pledge into completed projects, accessible healthcare and sustained employment.
